Across the overgrown field, beyond the old swing nestled amongst fragrant lilac bushes at the bottom of my childhood garden, was a train track. From the upstairs bedroom windows, I could sit on the window sill with my legs swung out onto the roof and see the junction and station where the railway tracks converged and then parted again to continue their route to the Meon Valley, Portsmouth and Southampton, then on to Brighton, Dover, Winchester and London. I loved watching the assortment of passenger’s intent on their own activity and fondly remember my own train journeys which were often a backdrop for the turmoil’s of my youth. Through good times and bad, there was an essential romance about trains that remains with me today. As an English girl living in Canada, it seemed fitting to incorporate a reference to this childhood memory with the expatriate term "pondhopper" and so lay claim to my little piece of cyberspace.
